The northwest gaited horse club's "fun rule" was prominently posted at the 4th annual evergreen gaited horse classic show and the exhibitors were taking it seriously. an atmosphere of fun, camaraderie and friendly competition was evident all over the puyallup fairgrounds. a total of 62 gaited horses were entered in the evergreen this year to show before judge mary donald of rupert, id. entries came from as far away as central california to participate in the show, which is becoming well known as a showcase for naturally gaited horses. the show committee got to work at the puyallup fairgrounds on thursday setting up the nghc booth, the dqp area in the warm-up arena, and the vendor display area. the show weekend kicked off on friday with exhibitor check-ins and a barbeque dinner for exhibitors later that evening. gaited dressage proves popular the nghc's "dressage for gaited horses" workshops were well attended this spring. the interest generated by the clinics continued going strong into the show. the evergreen's very first introductory dressage test had a wonderful turnout of 12 entries and was the show's largest class. melody miller of top hat dressage, was thrilled to be our dressage judge. the highest score in the test went to emily woolley and diamond's copper sun red ; her tennessee walking horse. emily took part in all three dressage workshops and practiced the training level test diligently. she won a gorgeous crystal browband from equesport for her winning performance. congratulations emily! the schooling classes, specifically for novice gaited horses or riders, proved very popular again this year. two of the schooling classes were among the biggest classes in the show. the 2-gait english schooling class had 11 entries and the walk & slow gait schooling class had 10 entries. just like last year, the evergreen show was fosh affiliated. fosh affiliation means that horses must either be liteshod or barefoot and prohibits the use of any action devices to enhance the gait. this year every horse entered in the show went through the dqp process. this was a new experience for our peruvian, paso fino and icelandic exhibitors. even though more horses were checked by the dqp this year than last year, the exams were finished quickly and there were no major holdups. once again the evergreen show was 100% clean with no violations. this is something the club should be extremely proud of. the evergreen is a model show that demonstrates natural gait and a successful show can go hand-inhand. please see accompanying article on page 7 for a description of the dqp process, what happens in an inspection and why these inspections are so important. ; first-place winners in each class received a goody bag filled with horse treats from smart pak equine and product samples from horseman's dream or cowboy magic. emmy capizzi donated two lovely handmade beaded browbands. they were awarded to the winners of the icelandic pleasure tolt-2 gait and winners of the schooling 2-gait championship. the best gaited horse of show winner, fortunata cr owned by dr. henry curry of oregon, received a beautiful stubben gaited horse saddle donated by noble horse saddlery. reserve best gaited horse, the paso fino tazio, owned by judi tolboe was awarded a crystal bridle donated by linda maquire of imperial farm lipizzaner horses. now for the really fun stuff mary and john benedict were decked out in scottish attire and mounted on their tennessee walking horse geldings, prime's blue chip blue ; and jfk charcoal black charlie ; . they were an incredibly handsome couple and won and free texas holdem poker game.

Over affected, but it was, essentially, enjoyable. the audience was allowed to get wrapped up in the story; something that i in my old fashioned way think is a little requirement for enjoyable theatre. it's too easy to fault-find, but you know something is wrong when you begin to cringe and there's no comic parody around. this happened once.for twenty minutes. the second play had something to do with shadows losing their `masters`, classical drama references and a wrenched commentary on the condition of modern theatre. to be honest, i got lost. actors were flouncing around the stage, long cloth was flying and confusion seemed quite at home. i did try to catch up, i really did, but it always managed to stay ahead of me. the other audience members felt the same, too. the lights went off at one point and they began to clap like it was over. then the lights turned back on and the play continued. the final play received the most favourable reception from the audience. it was a parody of the pretensions of student theatre. quite apt, i thought, considering what had just preceded it. but it felt too heavy-handed, too aware that it was trying to be satirically insightful. it flashed between ridiculous, obvious melodrama to comments on how stupid it was itself. those kind of self-reflexive parodies become too quickly tiresome, the joke gets laboured and then it starts to drag. self-deprecation is all fine and well on a small scale, but when it accounts for the entirety of the comic performance its effect does wane. saying that, the majority of the audience did seem to like it, and that's all that matters anyway. i just hope they weren't clapping out of politeness.
