Greetings fellow iron indian riders and indian motorcycle enthusiasts! wow, our third issue of smoke signals this year and, thanks to you and your contributions, it just keeps on getting better. speaking of getting better, we're two months into our second year and the momentum at the iron indian riders association shows no sign of diminishing. in fact, dare we say the iira is one of the fastest growing motorcycle rider groups in existence! our membership currently stands at well over 900 verifiable members, and have you seen our chapter list lately? i believe that we have 36 chapters! but by the time this goes to press the number will no doubt have increased. your tribal council has traveled many miles this year, and we have listened to what you, the members, have had to say, and we like what we're hearing from you. we've been told you want a bigger voice in the direction of this association, and we are pleased to announce that the first round of elections to fill the vacant tribal council seats is underway. a slate of candidates has been provided to the chapter presidents for approval. the results of this election will be posted on our internet forum and website on september 15th. you say you didn't get the chance to throw your hat in the ring? you want a chance to volunteer for a spot on the tribal council? don't worry. you still have a chance. soon there will be other vacancies that will need to be filled. for consideration in the upcoming elections, email your resume to the tribal council asap. or maybe you do not want the full responsibility of being on the tribal council, but you have skills that can help the iira and you would like to help the association. we are going to start an iira volunteers staff to help with specific tasks that the association needs help with. just let us know what you can do and how much time a month you could dedicate to the iira. your tribal council has been busy. we are in the midst of our annual renewal campaign, and the results have been outstanding with over 90% of our members renewing. those of you who joined between july 4 th, 2002 and july 3 rd, 2003 will or have already received an "inaugural member" patch when you renew your membership for your second year. with the growth of the association, we are able to better your benefits. we have moved our road side assistance plan from m.r.a. a reseller of road side assistance plans ; to n.s.d. because of our growth in membership we are now able to now buy direct from the provider n.s.d. ; and avoid going through a middle man. this should result in better service to our members from the road side assistance agency and end those problems that some of you had earlier in the year. after polling our membership via the members forum, we have confirmed what a few members of the tribal council had expected. even though many of our members have and like to participate in national events, you would like to see the iira produce more local "homegrown" events. luckily for us at the tribal council, we have dedicated folks heading our chapters who will make this happen. three homegrown pow wows are already on the books and more will be coming. please contact us if you need help in organizing an event in your area. anything from a you play poker run to a rally, we are here to help. in addition, we at the tribal council are currently reviewing our merchandise choices. so if there is something you'd like to see in the way of apparel, by all means, drop us a line. if you have artistic ability and some good ideas and would like to help create some new t-shirt designs, etc., contact us. in closing, the last nine months have been busy for those of us on the tribal council, but you, our members, make it all worthwhile. thank you, your tribal council and find poker.

Kma district # 08 members, saddened by the loss of david frasure, were quick to pledge funds generated from this you play poker run on june 2nd to help the frasure family pay funeral expenses. david became a kma member about two and 1 2 years ago and was serving as sergeant-at-arms for district # 08 at the time of his death. david will be missed and our hearts go out to his family and friends. this benefit poker run started in owensboro at the boatman and the 111 mile ride took us west on highway 56 through the communities of sorgho, west louisville, beech grove, where we paused for a refreshment stop, then on to sebree, tilden and then a stop for food and refreshments at ethel's hog heaven in morganfield. soon after leaving hog heaven we turned east on highway 60 and rode to henderson where we made a pit stop for fuel. we then traveled through reed and turned south on highway 1554 at stanley and traveled this route back to sorgho where we finished our run back to the boatman via our beginning route, highway 56. the final card was drawn and .00 was awarded for best hand, .00 was awarded for worst hand, 50 pay out was .50 and two leather vest, donated by gary and deb clark were given away. many thanks to everyone who rode and or helped in any way, especially kma members from districts 15 & 13 for their participation and special thanks to the boatman for the help and support they have given to district # 8 of the kentucky motorcycle association. james pate and atlantic city poker tournament.

In an editorial by vincent armenta in the santa barbara news press he slammed groups saying they used tactics that included bullying residents to sign their petition to the governor. anti expansion group members laughed and said "armenta did not give one example in his editorial because such an incident does not exist." things are heating up in the santa ynez valley from anti expansion group members receiving death threats on april 13th as witnessed and recorded by the solvang police, to the alleged harassment of frances snyder at a local store parking lot by long time chumash rival mr. torres, things certainly do seem to be exploding in the once quiet and peaceful santa ynez valley. anti expansion groups say the reason is due to behind the scenes planning by the chumash on issues that directly affect the community, keeping the public ignorant about issues that they should have a voice on. recent debates have been mostly about several california tribes making inquiries to expand the number of slot machines currently allowed by an additional 5000 or more. at present the chumash casino houses 2, 000 machines, while the largest casino in las vegas has only 3000. if governor schwarzenegger approves the request, the chumash and other tribes in the state would have the potential to own up to 7500 slots, which is 4500 more than the largest casino in vegas. some fear that additional slots or mega expansion to gaming would change the face of the santa ynez valley forever. tribal chairman armenta recently told santa barbara county supervisors that although the chumash were no longer involved in discussions with the governor's office, they will continue to support other tribes in their efforts to make such amendments to the state's compacts with the tribes. however, if the compacts are ratified, it would not only affect the tribes involved in these negotiations, it could open a venue for tribes and communities state wide to expand their gaming. ratifying state tribal gaming compacts governor arnold schwarzenegger is considering proposals to amend the states tribal compacts, which could help increase california's revenue, initially by approximately 500 million dollars. critics suggest that if the compacts are ratified, the cost to the state would be significantly higher than the possible monetary benefits. they expressed that 0 million seems like a lot of money but that it is a small amount when compared to california's 127.9 billion dollar spending budget. they contend that, the last time the governor amended compacts with tribes, he estimated a 300 million dollar gain, "when in reality, " said doug herthel, "the state only acquired about 27 million dollars from the agreement." with the estimated.
